Connections Matter

Silver Lining Mentoring wants to show that #ConnectionsMatter in our city. Our goal is simple. In July, August and September, we aim to:

  • recruit 100 potential mentors, so we can make 100 mentoring matches
  • raise $100,000 to support this incredible growth
  • accomplish this goal in 100 days

Silver Lining Mentoring wants every young person in foster care to have the consistent, positive relationships they deserve. We want to recruit the volunteer support and raise the resources we need to continue to create meaningful and vital connections for young people.

The Power of Connections

Mentoring is a high impact and cost-effective solution that has been proven to have positive effects on youth, including reductions in poverty; improved health outcomes; and greater interest in education. Research has shown that consistent, positive relationships are critical to the healthy development of children, and that young people will eschew other needs to seek out a sense of belonging. At Silver Lining, our mentoring relationships last an average of 55 months, which is six times the national average of nine months. We want our young people to find that critical sense of belonging and connection through consistent, positive, long-term, supportive relationships–exactly the kinds of relationships mentoring provides.

This is why #ConnectionsMatter.

On Sunday, July 15, Flour Bakery + Cafe hosted an all-you-can-eat cake event: Have Your Cake And Eat It Too. Featuring a variety of sweet and savory cakes, nearly 150 guests got enjoyed unlimited treats including carrot cake, Boston cream pie, and zucchini feta cake.
As a part of their partnership with Silver Lining Mentoring, Flour generously donated 100% of their proceeds from the popular event–nearly $5,000–directly to Silver Lining Mentoring. To enable this gift, all Flour employees, including founder Joanne Chang, volunteered their time and services for the event. In addition to this amazing event, Flour is also featuring Silver Lining Mentoring on all of its coffee sleeves during the month of July, as a part of SLM’s #ConnectionsMatter campaign.
Silver Lining Mentoring is extremely grateful to Flour Bakery + Cafe, and to Joanne Chang, and to everyone who came out on Sunday to enjoy delicious cake and support youth in foster care, and to help us recruit 100 mentors and raise $100,000 in 100 days. We are honored to have Flour as a partner!
